    MILLENNIUM MATHS PROJECT 


     

    A series of presentations and workshops will be offered to all year 8 students a the secondary schools in Gibraltar as part of a week long road show. The initiative is part of an outreach programme orchestrated by the University of Cambridge. Three workshops will be available to our young mathematicians. 

     

    The Enigma Project which will include a demonstration of a real WW2 Enigma Cipher Machine.

     

     


     

     

    The Maths of Sports which shall explore some of the underlying mathematics applicable at the Olympics and Paralympics games and finally a Hands on Maths show which will use puzzles and games to explore solving mathematical problems.

     

     


    CHARITY TRAINING

     

    The Kusuma Trust are keen for local charities to be supported. In response to the need that was present in the local community, Kusuma Trust Gibraltar, initiated and funded a charity training fair in conjunction with the Directory of Social Change. Five experts in their given fields including one trainer who was also a TEDx speaker, supplied a days worth of workshops covering topics such as 'Evaluation and Monitoring' 'Influence and Communication' and 'Business and Strategic Planning '.  DSC Director of Training Services, Christine Wright spoke of the enthusiasm from participants who represented over 12 different local charities. Kusuma Trust and DSC also offered free consultations to individual charities who wanted their charity to benefit from a private consultation session. Trustee Joey Garcia stated that the Kusuma Trust "will continue to support these training days" it is one of many "initiatives we are driving that will benefit the community as a whole."

    NAZARETH HOUSE 

     

    Nazareth House 'soup kitchen' was established 25 years ago by the late Bishop Charles Caruana and provides hot food on a daily basis  for those  in need. Kusuma Trustee Peter Isola presented Nazareth House with a cooker and Industrial Freezer in order to improve facilities and in particular to help ensure the work done by volunteers at the soup kitchen continues. Peter Isola told the volunteers at Nazareth house that "the trust is very keen to engage with the local community at many levels and volunteer charity work is what make our participation as a charitable organisation worthwhile"

     

     



    EXCELLENCE IN GIBRALTAR 

    Kusuma Trust Gibraltar are dedicated in promoting excellence in Gibraltar through education. This year we again invited Dr Howell to speak to our year 13 students to give them advice on applying to university.  Dr Howell focused on the Oxbridge application process but also gave common sense advice for all those deciding to go to university. Current KT scholars also participated in this year talks, giving advice and sharing their experience on the application process, and university life. Day two, Dr Howell and our Scholars focused  on workshops helping students hone their interview techniques. As part of Kusuma's commitment to promote excellence the Kusuma Trust offer a Scholarship scheme. In the same week we awarded Excellence Scholarships to 7 top scholars who are off to top universities in their chosen fields

    GLOBAL XCHANGE 

     

    Widely acclaimed volunteer programme Global Xchange is now, with the help of Kusuma Trust Gibraltar, being offered to Gibraltarian's. The first contingent of young participants from Gibraltar are due to leave in October for a 6 month placement. This year's Kusuma Trust GX participants and their placements are:

    This bilateral exchange gives young people an opportunity to learn a new culture, travel and to become an active citizen.

    ADDISS VISIT GIBRALTAR  

    ADDISS is the UK's national ADHD charity with 20 years experience supporting families and professionals working with adults and children with ADHD. With our help, ADHD Gibraltar have been able to host a succession of events presented by ADDISS to promote awareness of ADHD. These include session for professionals, awareness information sessions and behavioural course '1-2-3 Magic' which offers effective parenting solutions for children with challenging behaviour.

    NGOs and charitable institutions are invited to make applications to us directly at  info@kusumatrust.gi for training courses that they consider might best be offered in Gibraltar for volunteers/employees.

     

    AWARDING EXCELLENCE

     

     

    To promote excellence in Gibraltar the Kusuma Trust has set up the Kusuma Excellence Scholarship, aimed primarily at certain sciences, mathematics, medicine and business related subjects to be studied at top universities, the scheme has been extended to include a Fine/Performing Arts award and a Sports award.  Among this years benefactors was Jordan Picardo, a sixteen year old dancer who was awarded a Fine/Performing Arts Scholarship to help with costs for his tuition at the English National Ballet.

    NEW GENERATION OF VENTILATOR

     


    Founder Dr Soma Pujari with Trustee Peter Isola presented a a new state of the art ventilator to St Bernards Hospital. The new ventilator offers "smoother ventilation for increased patient comfort and improved caring" with its many state of the art features it will undoubtedly be of great benefit to the patients and ease the burden on Doctors and Nurses. With the purchase of this ventilator supplied by the Kusuma Trust, St Bernards Hospital were also able to buy another ventilator on the back of this purchase. 


    Kusuma's Charity Focus  



    Kusuma Trust Gibraltar is committed to facilitate the growth and development of local charities. One of our aims is to provide excellent training opportunities. In May 2011 KT Gib joined forces with The Directory of Social Change to bring an afternoon of training to local charities in Gibraltar. The interactive session have been designed to help NGOs to be more efficient in their day to day operations and provide areas of training where there is an identified need. Over 12 different charities attended this afternoon taster session

    UNIVERSITY VISIT & CAREERS FAIR 2011

     Kusuma Gibraltar manned a stall at the Gibraltar joint comprehensive schools' careers fair in February 2011 . Once again professors from Oxford, Imperial College and York universities gave advice on applications to UK's top universities. Also present were representatives from VSO the voluntary work overseas organisation.

    WHEN SCIENCE IS FUN

     

     November 2010 has seen all of Gibraltar's first schools enjoying a week of learning with a team out from the British Science Museum which has been initiated and funded by the Kusuma Trust Gibraltar and organised with the Department of Education.

    CHILDLINE GIBRALTAR

     Childline Gibraltar was set up in 2006 with the object of ending cruelty to children in Gibraltar from bullying to abuse. In summer 2010 Kusuma Gibraltar were delighted to agree a £10,000 donation for the coming year and to have helped enable Childline Gibraltar's restructure for a good future.

     Gibraltar's Health Minister Yvette del Agua formally opened the two day 2nd International Biomedical Science Conference held in November 2010 which the Kusuma Trust sponsored.

    ROAD MAP TO THE TOP UNIVERSITIES

     Cambridge University Admissions Tutor Professor Philip Howell (right) with Kusuma Trustee Joey Garcia. Professor Howell visited Gibraltar September 2010 to address joint groups of sxith formers from Bayside and Westside School and the Gibraltar College on the important issues that arise when making university applications to leading institutions. He also held workshops focusing on Oxbridge applications and interview techniques. Professor Howell was assisted by Kusuma Scholars Joe Bristow and Vivek Sadhwani.

Kusuma is especially interested in hearing from applicants working in local NGOs and charitable institutions who can bring further benefit to those institutions from attending recognised training or courses.     TRAINING FOR CHARITY / NGO WORKERS

    Kusuma Trust Gibraltar is especially interested in hearing from applicants working in local NGO's or in the Charity sector in general who may be interested in attending recognised training courses from international organisations that may be offered in Gibraltar. NGOs and charitable institutions are also invited to make applications to us directly at info@kusumatrust.gi where they consider training might best be offered to their volunteers/employees with courses organised to be held in Gibraltar. Support for individual training at recognised UK institutions will also be considered.

     

    OUT OF AFRICA

    Gibraltarian teacher Joanne Barabich is the first local person to take up the Kusuma opportunity to work with VSO. After a week in Accra, Ghana's capital to complete her In-country Training Course, she took the twelve hour bus trip up to Wa in the Upper West region of the country.
